FOCUS AREAS & COMMITMENT TO THE APRM

The review and assessment in respect of the APRM was conducted in four substantive areas namely:

  • Democracy and political governance;
  • Economic governance and management;
  • Corporate governance; and
  • Socio-economic development

The assessment was based on a questionnaire that was developed by the African Union that covered the four thematic areas.

Ghana's commitment to the APRM

Ghana was among the first six countries to officially declare its intention to accede to the APRM at the 5th Heads of State and Government implementation Committee in Abuja, Nigeria on November 3, 2002.

It was also among the first 12 countries to officially accede to the APRM by signing the Memorandum of Understanding in March, 2003, and the first to declare its intention to implement the APRM. In the same year, Ghana became the first African Country to create a Ministry of Regional Co-operation and NEPAD (MRCN) to prepare the ground for the implementation of the APRM in the country among others.Presently 23 other African countries have acceded to the APRM, these include Rwanda, Kenya, Mauritius, Nigeria and South Africa.
